Farewell July, and hello August! Time is going by pretty fast in 2017, no? Can’t believe it’s already August! A lot is in stored for us this month including our National Day celebration! If you’re not sure what to do around Sabah this month, here are some ideas:

Asia Mountain Bike Series @ Pisompuruan Square, Tambunan

4 – 6 Aug 2017

An event jointly organized by the Sabah State Cycling Association and Tambunan Cycling Association, the Asia Mountain Bike Series welcomes riders from different parts of the world including Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Nepal, Japan just to name a few. Riders will be racing for the coveted champion’s jersey this year in Tambunan.


Moginakan Festival @ Kg. Nunuk Ragang, Tompios, Ranau

5 – 6 Aug 2017

Moginakan refers to the annual Re-union Festival of the great multi-ethnic Kadazandusun Family, while calling to the mind the Ancestral Spirits and Souls of all the Departed Members. This event is held at Kg. Nunuk Ragang, Tompios, Ranau to mark the installation of the Kadazandusun’s Huguan Siou (Paramount Leader) and to commemorate the original settlement of the Kadazandusun community. Visitors can scour for bargain finds at the Tamu (open air market) or enjoy events such as the traditional sports and cultural performances.

Sandakan Day Memorial @ Sandakan Memorial Park

15 August 2017

Remember the fallen heroes of the Australian and British prisoners -of-war (POW) who endured notorious Death Marches from Sandakan to Ranau in 1945. A memorial is held on the 15th of August every year at the Sandakan Memorial Park, which was once the site of a Prisoners of War Camp. Families and friends form bear and far gather to lay wreaths in honour of their loved ones.

National Day Celebration At Matunggong @ New Town Square, Matunggong

Come together and head over to Matunggong at Kudat to celebrate our National Day with a variety of fun activities in store!

Tambunan Strongfit Challenge @ Pisompuruan Square, Tambunan

23 – 24 Aug 2017

Tambunan Strongfit Challenge is an extreme quadrathlon event that includes a 5km run, 4km kayaking on Tambunan’s Pegalan River, 2km cycling and finally a series of strongman sports such as the Military Press, Dead Lift and even a Rampanau (bamboo stilts) walk to the finish line.


The Rungus Photography & Art Exhibition @ Kg. Tinangol, Matunggong, Kudat

25 – 26 Aug 2017

The Rungus Photography and Art Exhibition is organized to recognize the contributions and efforts of Rungus photographers in the state. During the event, visitors can also enjoy cultural performances, a Rungus fashion show as well as a handicraft sale and exhibition. The Rungus beauty queens or also known as Gimpuhut will also make a special appearance during the Charity Dinner, so don’t miss out on this event! Don’t forget to have a taste of the local brew called Kinomol while you’re there!

Merdeka Day Open Regatta @ Kinabalu Yacht Club, Tanjung Aru Kota Kinabalu

25 – 27 Aug 2017

The Merdeka Day Open Regatta is an annual event held to celebrate Merdeka Day. Held at Kinabalu Yacht Club, the event also aims to promote sailing as a sporting event in Sabah.

National Day @ Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, Kota Kinabalu

31 August 2017

On 31st August 1957, the Federation of Malaya States gained its independence from the British. Hence, this day is known as ‘Hari Merdeka’ or Independence Day. Every state will have a march-past simultaneously with the National level held in Kuala Lumpur.
