It’s time to bid farewell to another month in 2017. March went by like a breeze and now, it’s time to gear-up for April, which has a lot in store for everyone! Check out the activities and events that are happening in the awesome month of April:
1 – 30 Apr 2017 @ Murut Cultural Centre, Tenom
The Kalimaran Festival is a food and cultural-filled event of the local community of Tenom. Also something to look forward to is the various traditional sports like spinning top, or what the locals call, gasing, melastik or slingshot and also Kuit Tampurung Kelapa, also known as the coconut shell footrace. Other activities happening during the event are cultural performances and cooking competitions.
Sabah Agriculture Park 16th Anniversary Carnival
1 – 2 Apr 2017 @ Sabah Agriculture Park
The Sabah Agricultural Park located in Tenom will be celebrating its 16th anniversary with a day filled with fun and games as well as other activities including a fishing competition. There is also lots to see at the park that’s home to an array of plants from ferns, blooms and fruit trees.
25th Invitational Artists Exhibition
10 Apr – 7 Jul 2017 @ Sabah Art Gallery
An exciting art exhibition not to be missed. Sabah Art Gallery is inviting both established and known artists to showcase their most recent artwork at the gallery. This is to appreciate and honour these artists’ efforts for their contribution to the development of art in Sabah throughout the years.
Japanese Food Fair
12 – 16 Apr 2017 @ Centre Atrium, G/F, 1Borneo Hypermall
Do you love anything Japanese? Then this event is not to be missed. A mouth-watering food-filled event that will feature the latest, most trendiest and delectable Japanese food and beverage at One Borneo Hyper Mall from 10:00am – 10:00pm.
Special Exhibition-‘Collection of Islamic Civilization’
15 Apr – 31 Aug 2017 @ Sabah Museum
In celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Museum of Islamic Civilization, Sabah Museum will be displaying a collection of Islamic Civilization artifacts from around the world.
Open Tagal Day (Fish Harvesting Day)
16 April 2017 @ Tagal Tinopikon Park, Penampang
Happening at Tagal Tinopikon Park in Penampang, the Open Tagal Day event is open to the public annually. It gives visitors a glimpse of the traditional system of fishing using sustainable methods to prevent over-fishing from happening. However, the event also depends on weather conditions as all activities will be held in the river. Only a limited number of visitors will be allowed in at a time for environmental reasons. Do take note that pre-booking is required.
The Rungus Kiansamung Festival
20 – 22 Apr 2017 @ Kg. Tinangol, Matunggong, Kudat
Take a drive up north to the village of Tinangol in Kudat for the Rungus Kiansamung Festival in search of the Rungus strongman. This local strongman festival will showcase various traditional sports, activities and rituals, including the Hontira (a type of sport) and Mangagi – a fascinating ritual to summon the spirits of the Earth, Water, Sky and Ansamung (a Rungus spirit) to bestow strength and power to the participants.
Regatta Lepa Semporna
21 – 23 Apr 2017 @ Regatta Lepa Square, Semporna
A colourful annual state event, the Regatta Lepa Semporna event pays homage to the lepa. The lepa is a trditional single-mast sail boat of the Bajau community of Semporna and this event showcases a flotilla of beautifully coloured boats that will be in the run for the title of ‘Most Beautiful Lepa’. There will also be various cultural performances, the Lepa Beauty Pageant, traditional sports and games as well as a fireworks display.
Lest We Forget Run
24 April 2017 @ Jalan Tugu, Kota Kinabalu
This annual event starts with a two-kilometre symbolic run around the city centre and ends at Jalan Tugu, in front of Kota Kinabalu City Hall building. A wreath-laying ceremony is then held to commemorate those fallen heroes during the world wars.
25 April 2017 @ Sandakan Memorial Park
A poignant ceremony takes place at dawn at the Sandakan Memorial Park, where families and friends from near and far gather in memory to honour the Australian, New Zealand and local soldiers who perished during the Second World War in Sabah.
Tambunan Food and Cuisine Festival
25 April 2017 @ Pisompuruan Square, Tambunan
Get a taste of over 100 types of dishes at this food and cuisine event! This festival held in the district of Tambunan features both traditional and fusion delicacies and will be a one-day-only coupon-based event. Support the locals of Tambunan and don’t miss out!
6th Bundle Festival
28 Apr – 1 May 2017 @ Tawau Sports Complex
The bundle festival is the perfect event to go to for anyone who loves a good bargain! Held twice a year in Tawau, bundle-hunters will have a chance to get their hands on clothing and apparels, handicrafts, health products and more. There will also be a weekend of fun and games as well as music!
KK Food & Bakery Bake Fiesta (KKFBBF) 4th Edition
28 – 30 Apr 2017 @ Suria Sabah Shopping Mall
It’s a food galore at the KK Food & Bakery Bake Fiesta! Come on down to have a taste of an array of food from the best cafes, restaurants and retailers from all over KK during the fiesta. Home-cooked meals will also be showcased. This is an event that will definitely whet your appetite!
29 – 30 Apr 2017 @ Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa
To promote Sabah Indigenous culture to the world by creating a platform for Sabah’s fashion designers and artist to showcase their beautiful and creative designs.
Tambunan Ka’amatan Charity Run 2017 (TKCR2017)
Run in the name of charity! This annual enters its third year, with a more challenging route for avid runners. Follow the scenic route that weaves in and out of some of Tambunan’s picturesque villages, accompanied by the beat of the traditional Dusun gongs, making this a unique running experience. Proceeds from the run will go to a charitable cause.
